Replacing single glazed wooden windows in Dundee: a 1980s bungalow
By Tony Kalsi, Owner · 2 October 2026
The original 1980s single glazed wooden windows on this Dundee bungalow had gone rotten and draughty, and the house was losing its heat through them. We carried out a full house window upgrade with modern energy efficient windows, which will give the home better heat retention, lower energy bills and less outside noise, with a clean, modern finish.

The old windows
Why the original wooden windows had to go
These were the bungalow's original 1980s windows: single panes of glass in timber frames. Over the years the timber had rotted and the windows had become draughty, so the heat the owners were paying for was escaping through them and the whole house was less comfortable to live in.
The Energy Saving Trust says single glazed windows are not as energy efficient as the other types of glazing it recommends.
The upgrade
A full house window upgrade, finished in white
This was a full house window upgrade, so no room in the bungalow is left on the old single glazing. Every one of the original timber windows came out, and modern energy efficient windows went in throughout, finished in white against the pebbledash walls.
The new windows will also bring improved security. The Energy Saving Trust says energy efficient glazing reduces heat loss through windows and means fewer draughts and cold spots, and that energy efficient windows insulate your home against external noise.
Planning
Do you need permission to replace windows in Dundee?
For most houses, no. The Scottish Government's householder permitted development guidance says like-for-like replacement windows do not need a planning application anywhere, and in most cases planning permission is already granted even when the new windows change how the house looks.
Two exceptions are worth checking before you order. In a conservation area you may need to notify the council and give it some details first, and a listed building needs listed building consent. Dundee City Council designates conservation areas across the city, so if your home sits in one, check with the council before the work starts.
Your windows
Signs it is time to replace your own windows
The signs on this bungalow were rotten timber, draughts and heat escaping through single panes of glass. The Energy Saving Trust adds condensation between the panes, discolouration and windows that have become difficult to open and close. If you are seeing any of these, have your windows looked at.
