Replacing rotten wooden windows in Arbroath: new uPVC and two doors
By Tony Kalsi, Owner · 9 October 2026
When wooden windows start to rot, no amount of filler and fresh paint keeps them going for long. At a bungalow in Arbroath, five original wooden windows had reached that stage, with damp getting in and the frames needing constant treatment, so we took them all out and fitted new white uPVC in their place. We also fitted two new doors: a steel blue composite front door and an anthracite uPVC back door. The house now looks sharper from the street and is far easier to look after.

What we found
The job: five rotten wooden windows in an Arbroath home
The customer had five original wooden windows that had turned into a constant headache. The timber had gone soft with rot, damp was working its way in, and keeping the frames serviceable meant treating and repainting them year after year. We took all five out and fitted brand new white uPVC windows in their place, so that upkeep stops for good.
Why uPVC
Why uPVC where the old timber had failed
Timber windows can look lovely, but they only stay that way with regular upkeep, and once rot takes hold they are living on borrowed time. uPVC does away with that yearly job. The Energy Saving Trust says uPVC frames do not need regular maintenance, which was the main reason this customer went for them. Modern energy efficient glazing also helps keep warm air inside the house through the winter, so there is a comfort gain on top of the end of the painting. You can see the slim trickle vent along the top of the new window below. It lets the room breathe without opening anything, which matters because the Scottish Government's building standards set out what a replacement window has to achieve.
The doors
Two new doors to finish the house
The windows were only half the job. We also fitted a steel blue composite front door and an anthracite uPVC back door, and the two of them lift the whole look of the bungalow. A composite door is built to be tough and secure, and it holds its colour without the painting a timber door needs, so the steel blue stays sharp against the stone front for years. Round the back, the anthracite door carries the same low upkeep as the new windows.
Windows on the Angus coast
Arbroath sits on the Angus coast, right on the North Sea, and homes here get their share of wind and driving rain off the water. That weather is hard on exposed timber, which is one reason wooden frames in a spot like this need so much looking after. Swapping them for uPVC takes that worry away for good. For anyone in Arbroath weighing up the same work, a full window and door upgrade like this is a job we do week in, week out, and every new window is made to meet the current Scottish building standards.
